Warning about Diet Pills: Side Effects and Dangers
Different types of diet pills cause different types of problems. Some of the side effects are less severe and a person can live with them while others are more severe.
Here is a list of the side effects and dangers categorized by diet pill type:
Prescription Fat blockers (i.e. Xenical)-Usually the worst problem would be loose and oily stool or fecal incontinence and/or the need to have a bowel movement frequently. Sometimes the urgency of having to have a bowel movement may also occur. However, it is said that reducing the fat content to 15 grams per meal can reverse this problem.
Longer-term problems associated with using certain fat blockers such as Xenica (orlistat) include liver problems or breast cancer. However, in most cases a patient probably would not be using this medication for long enough for those more serious problems to occur. There is a warning that this drug could be potentially addictive, but not as much as when using other prescription diet pills.
Prescription appetite suppressants (i.e. Meridia)-The main problem with using this drug is that it is classified as a controlled substance. Therefore-more so than when using other types of prescription diet pills-users have a potential to become highly addicted to it.
This is especially true for people who have a history of drug or alcohol abuse. It may only be recommended for short term use. This drug also has a higher incidence rate of heart attacks or cardiovascular disease than other weight loss drugs. It also raises the blood pressure or pulse in some people who use it, which of course is the first step towards heart disease.
The more common side effects are more minor and usually include one or more of the following: dry mouth, strange taste, nausea, upset stomach, constipation, interrupted sleep, sleeplessness, dizziness, drowsiness, menstrual cramps, headache, flushing, or joint/muscle pain. It also can cause a variety of psychological and mental problems.
Herbal diet pills-It really depends upon which ones you use. Of course, you should never use an ephedrine-based product (i.e. the old version of Ephedra). This is a substance that has been banned by the FDA because it could be fatal.
Hoodia is a more acceptable and safe herb that is used today in many diet pills and supplements. The only main concern is that there is not enough scientific research completed to determine how safe it is.
The worse problem would occur in people who have liver problems as it is not broken down very easily. The other problem is that if you are diabetic it can have an affect on your blood sugar levels. Therefore, though it is considered safe for most people you should be careful.
